Key takeaways
- Banks follow RBI KYC rules: a proprietorship usually needs two documents in the business name, plus the proprietor's own KYC.
- Common business proofs include GST, Udyam and shop and establishment certificates, municipal licences and the full income tax return showing business income.
- If you have only one business document, the bank may accept it after verifying your business at its address.
- Keep business and personal transactions separate; it simplifies accounting, tax returns and loan applications.
A current account for a proprietorship is often the first thing a new business owner needs after the basic registrations. Customers, payment gateways and marketplaces want to pay a business account, and separating business money from personal money makes everything from GST to income tax easier. This guide explains the documents banks ask for and what to consider when choosing an account.
Why the documents are different for a proprietorship
A company or LLP has a certificate of incorporation that proves it exists. A proprietorship does not, because it is not a separate legal entity. So the Reserve Bank of India's KYC rules ask banks to verify the business in another way: through documents issued in the name of the business.
What the RBI KYC rules require
For a sole proprietary firm, the bank collects the proprietor's own KYC documents and any two documents in the name of the proprietary concern as proof of business or activity. Documents commonly accepted include:
- Registration certificate, including the Udyam registration certificate
- Certificate or licence issued by a municipal authority under the Shops and Establishments Act
- GST registration certificate
- Certificate or registration issued by a tax authority, such as professional tax
- Importer Exporter Code issued by DGFT, or a licence or certificate of practice from a professional body set up by law
- The complete income tax return (not just the acknowledgement) in the proprietor's name that reflects the business income, filed with the Income Tax Department
- Utility bills, such as electricity, water and landline telephone bills, in the name of the business
Only one document? Where a business genuinely cannot produce two documents, the bank may accept one, at its discretion, after carrying out contact point verification and confirming the business activity at the address.
Proprietor's own KYC
- PAN card
- Aadhaar or another officially valid document for identity and address
- Recent photograph
- Mobile number and email address
The name, date of birth and address should match across these documents. Mismatches are the most common reason for delays.
Getting the business documents ready
If you are just starting, the quickest way to have two business documents is usually:
- Udyam registration, free and online on the official portal. See our Udyam guide.
- Shop and establishment registration, where your state requires it.
- GST registration, if your turnover or business model requires it, or voluntarily. See our GST registration guide.
Our article on GST vs Udyam vs shop and establishment registration explains how these fit together.
Choosing the right current account
- Minimum balance: current accounts often require a higher average balance, with charges if it falls short.
- Free transactions: check limits on cash deposits, cash withdrawals and branch transactions each month.
- Digital payments: UPI collection, QR codes, card machines and payment gateway support.
- Charges: fees for cheque books, NEFT, RTGS and IMPS.
- Credit access: a bank where you can later get an overdraft or working capital loan.
Keep business and personal money separate
A proprietor and the business are the same in law, but your accounts should still be separate. Pay yourself by transferring money from the business account to your personal account as drawings, and pay personal bills from your personal account. This keeps your books clean, makes GST reconciliation easier, supports your income tax return and builds a clear record for future loans.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run my proprietorship from my savings account?
Banks expect business transactions to go through a current account, and savings accounts may be restricted for commercial use. A separate current account also makes your accounts cleaner.
Is GST registration necessary to open a current account?
No. GST is only one of the accepted documents. You can use other proofs, such as Udyam and shop and establishment certificates.
Can a proprietor open a current account online?
Many banks offer online or assisted account opening with video KYC for the proprietor, followed by verification of the business documents and address.
Will the account be in my name or the business name?
The account is opened in the business name, for example 'Sharma Traders', with you as the proprietor and authorised signatory.
