Questions about GST registration

How long does GST registration take?

Usually 3 to 7 working days after the application if there are no queries. Applications flagged for physical verification or clarification take longer.

Do I need to visit any office for GST registration?

Usually not. Sometimes the GST portal asks for biometric Aadhaar authentication at a GST Suvidha Kendra. If that happens, it's a short visit and we prepare you for it. You never need to visit our office.

Can I register GST at a rented or home address?

Yes, with a rent agreement or the owner's consent letter and a recent utility bill or property tax receipt.

What is the composition scheme?

A simpler scheme for small businesses with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore (₹75 lakh in some states) for goods. Tax is paid at a low fixed rate with quarterly payments and one annual return, but you cannot claim input tax credit or sell inter-state.

Who must register for GST?

Businesses whose yearly turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services (lower in some special category states), and anyone making inter-state supplies of goods, selling through e-commerce platforms or acting as a casual taxable person, whatever their turnover.

What happens if I miss a GST return?

A late fee applies for every day of delay, interest at 18% a year applies to tax paid late, and you cannot file the next return until the earlier one is filed. Long gaps can lead to cancellation of your registration.
